What is Claude Haiku 5.5?
Claude Haiku 5.5 is Anthropic’s smallest and fastest current model, released on 7 October 2026 as the third model of the Claude 5.5 family, after Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5. According to Anthropic, it is built for high-volume, cost-sensitive work such as classification, extraction, summaries, quick lookups, live customer support and sub-agent tasks next to Opus 5.5 or Sonnet 5.5. It is the first Haiku model with an adjustable effort setting.
Pricing depends on prompt length. For prompts up to 100,000 tokens it costs $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens; above 100,000 tokens it costs $0.50 and $2.50. Cache reads are $0.01 per million (up to 100K). That is far below Claude Haiku 4.5 ($1 / $5): Anthropic says Haiku 5.5 costs around 75% less on average, even though its newer tokenizer counts about 30% more tokens for the same text. Full rates are on Anthropic’s pricing page.
It has a 1M-token context window and up to 128K output tokens, and is available on the Claude API as claude-haiku-5-5 and on AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure. Anthropic’s announcement does not say whether the Claude apps’ free plan uses it. For harder agentic coding, Anthropic still points to Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5; see Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Claude Opus 5.5, or estimate a monthly bill with the AI API cost calculator.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Claude Haiku 5.5 cost per 1M tokens?
Claude Haiku 5.5 costs $0.100 per 1M input tokens and $0.500 per 1M output tokens. At a typical 4:1 input-to-output mix that blends to about $0.180 per 1M tokens.
How much does Claude Haiku 5.5 cost per month?
A small-team workload of 20M input and 5M output tokens a month costs about $4.50 on Claude Haiku 5.5. A side project (1M in / 0.25M out) costs roughly $0.23.
What is a cheaper alternative to Claude Haiku 5.5?
Mistral 7B is the strongest cheaper option in our database at $0.0220 per 1M blended — about 88% less than Claude Haiku 5.5. It is also open-weight, so self-hosting is an option.
Can I run Claude Haiku 5.5 locally?
No. Claude Haiku 5.5 is a closed, API-only model — the weights are not released, so it cannot be self-hosted.
Why does Claude Haiku 5.5 charge more for output than input?
Output tokens are generated one at a time and cannot be batched the way a prompt can, so they cost the provider more to serve. Claude Haiku 5.5 charges 5× more for output, which is why prompt-heavy workloads are far cheaper to run than generation-heavy ones.
