The Best AI for Resume Writing in 2026: 8 Free and Paid Tools Compared

  • A free stack covers most job searches: draft in ChatGPT or Claude, then tailor and keyword-check in Teal’s free plan.
  • ChatGPT’s free plan offers unlimited GPT-6 text chats, Claude’s free plan can return a downloadable file, and Gemini suits Google Docs users.
  • Rezi has a $149 lifetime plan, and Kickresume is the cheapest yearly plan at $54 every 12 months.
  • Watch the billing: Resume.io’s $2.95 trial renews at $29.95 every 4 weeks, and Enhancv’s free plan lasts 7 days.
  • AI can invent facts. Check every line, and remove your address and phone number before pasting a CV into a chatbot.

Finding the best AI for resume writing in 2026 is less about one magic app and more about pairing the right tools. Assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini handle drafting and rewriting, while dedicated builders add templates, keyword matching and job tracking. Below, eight options are compared on price, free-plan limits and privacy, using each vendor’s own pages on 22 October 2026. Convly did not test these tools; our editorial policy explains how we research.

First, a quick word on ATS

An applicant tracking system (ATS) is the software employers use to collect and filter applications. HR Dive reported in 2021 on a Harvard Business School and Accenture report in which 88% of employers surveyed said qualified, high-skilled candidates were rejected because they did not exactly match the criteria.

That is why builders sell keyword matching or an “ATS check”. Treat those scores as hints, not guarantees: each builder’s score is its own estimate, not the score an employer’s ATS will give. What helps: mirror the job ad’s real keywords, use standard headings (Experience, Education, Skills), keep a one-column layout, and send PDF or DOCX as the ad requests.

1. ChatGPT: best free all-rounder

According to OpenAI’s pricing page, the Free plan costs $0 and includes unlimited text chats with GPT-6, within abuse guardrails. File uploads are limited on the Free plan, so pasting your CV as text saves your upload allowance. In the US, Go costs $8 per month for higher limits and may include ads (Go pricing is localized in some markets). Plus costs $20 per month and adds advanced reasoning, custom GPTs and projects.

Paste a job ad and your bullets, and ask it to rewrite them around the ad’s skills without inventing anything. See our guide to using ChatGPT for writing and our ChatGPT plans comparison.

Choose it if you want one free tool for drafting, rewriting bullets and tailoring your CV to a pasted job ad.

2. Claude: best for turning rough notes into a finished file

Claude, from Anthropic, is an alternative to ChatGPT for drafting and rewriting. Per Anthropic’s pricing page, the free plan includes Sonnet and Haiku, memory, Artifacts, up to 5 projects, and file creation with code execution, so it can return a finished file rather than text to copy. Anthropic’s latest Sonnet model, Claude Sonnet 5.5, was released on 28 September 2026. Pro costs $20 per month, or $17 per month billed yearly, and adds Opus, Research and unlimited projects.

Choose it if you want a ready-to-download resume file built from rough notes.

3. Google Gemini: best if you live in Google Docs

The free Gemini app includes Canvas, a document-editing workspace; Deep Research, for researching a company; and Gems, reusable custom assistants, according to Google’s subscriptions page. In the US, AI Plus costs $4.99 per month and Google AI Pro costs $19.99 per month; AI Pro adds Gemini in Gmail and Docs, Gemini 3.8 Flash and 3.1 Pro, four times the limits and 5 TB of storage. See our Google AI plans explainer and Gemini beginner’s guide.

Choose it if you already write your CV in Google Docs or apply from Gmail.

4. Teal: best free dedicated builder

Teal’s Free Forever plan, per Teal’s pricing page, includes unlimited resumes and job tracking, 10 templates, top-5 job-description keyword matching and limited AI credits. Free tools include an ATS Resume Checker, a Job Description Match score and a Keyword Scanner. Teal+ costs $13 every 7 days, $29 every 30 days or $79 every 90 days, and unlocks unlimited AI credits, keyword matching and templates, plus advanced design settings.

Choose it if you want to tailor one CV to many jobs and track your applications without paying.

5. Rezi: best for ATS keyword targeting

Rezi’s free plan, per Rezi’s pricing page, includes 1 resume, 3 PDF downloads, 1 AI interview, the AI Resume Writer and Editor, and limited Rezi Score and AI Keyword Targeting. Pro costs $29 per month for unlimited resumes and downloads, the full Rezi Score across 23 key metrics, DOCX and Google Drive export, and one expert review a month. Lifetime is a one-time $149 for the Pro features minus the expert review. Paid plans carry a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Choose it if keyword scoring matters most, or you change jobs often and would rather pay once.

6. Kickresume: cheapest paid plan for a year

Kickresume’s free plan offers 4 resume templates, 4 cover letter templates, 20,000 pre-written phrases and unlimited downloads, but no AI Resume Checker or AI writer, per Kickresume’s pricing page. Premium costs $19 per month, $27 every 3 months or $54 every 12 months. It adds an AI Writer that drafts a full resume from a job title and job ad, an ATS Resume Checker, 40+ resume templates, LinkedIn and PDF import, and a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Choose it if you want an AI writer and can commit to a quarter or a year.

7. Enhancv: best for design-forward resumes

Enhancv’s free plan lasts only 7 days. It includes all templates, but adds Enhancv branding and caps you at 12 section items, per Enhancv’s pricing page. Pro is billed monthly, quarterly or every 6 months, at prices that vary by region. It adds an ATS check, real-time content suggestions, no branding and, on the quarterly plan, up to 300 resumes and cover letters per quarter. Enhancv says that if you paste a job ad, it shows what to include to get past ATS screening. It can also translate your resume into languages including Arabic, French, German and Spanish.

Choose it if you want a visually distinctive resume or need a version in another language.

8. Resume.io: polished templates, but watch the trial

Resume.io’s free plan gives one resume and one cover letter, downloadable as TXT only. The 7-day trial costs $2.95, then auto-renews at $29.95 every 4 weeks unless you cancel, per Resume.io’s pricing page. That is 13 charges a year, not 12. A $49.95 quarterly plan with the same features is also offered. Paid access includes unlimited resumes, all premium templates and unlimited PDF downloads, with a 7-day money-back guarantee.

Resume.io says its AI resume builder suggests improved content for each section based on your field and target role, updates keywords when you paste a job ad, and writes cover letters.

Choose it if you need one polished CV quickly and will set a reminder to cancel the trial.

Honourable mention: LinkedIn Premium

LinkedIn Premium’s AI resume tips review your uploaded resume against a job posting and suggest rewrites you can export or attach to an application. The feature is desktop-only and English-only, according to LinkedIn’s help page. That page lists it as a Premium feature but doesn’t say which Premium plans include it, so check before you subscribe.

Check every line: AI can make things up

That same LinkedIn page warns its AI tips “may contain inaccuracies” and recommends verifying them. Any tool here can invent a metric, inflate a job title or add a skill you don’t have, so check your final draft against what you actually did.

Privacy: what to do before you paste your CV

Delete your home address and phone number before pasting a CV into any assistant. Then use each vendor’s controls:

  • ChatGPT: turn off “Improve the model for everyone” in Settings > Data controls so new chats aren’t used for training. Temporary Chat stays out of history, memory and training, but may be kept up to 30 days for safety (OpenAI FAQ).
  • Claude: chats are used for training if you allow it in the Model Improvement setting, if a chat is flagged for safety review, or if you opt in another way (such as the Trusted Tester Program). Thumbs up/down feedback stores the whole conversation for up to five years and may be used for training. Incognito chats are never used to improve Claude (Anthropic privacy centre).
  • Gemini: Google says a subset of chats is reviewed by human reviewers and kept up to three years, so avoid confidential details. With Keep Activity off, chats aren’t used for training (unless you send Google feedback) but are kept for 72 hours (Gemini privacy help).
