ChatGPT has four plans for individuals, and the difference between them is not how many messages you can send — every plan, including the free one, offers unlimited everyday text chats. What changes is how smart the model answering you is, how much you can upload and paste, how many images and voice chats you get, and which extra tools unlock. This guide explains each plan in plain language, using the figures on OpenAI’s pricing page as of 11 September 2026.

What the free plan really gives you
The free plan is genuinely usable, not a trial. You can chat as much as you like with GPT-5.6 Luna, and you get a limited taste of almost everything else: uploading files, creating images (more slowly than paid plans), voice conversations, Deep Research, memory, and limited access to Codex and to ChatGPT’s “Work” feature in the desktop app.
The limit most people notice first is size. On the fast model you can paste roughly 12 pages of text in one go. That is enough for an email thread or a short report, but not for a long contract, a thesis chapter or a big spreadsheet export. Image creation is the second limit people run into.
ChatGPT Go ($5 a month): more of everything, no new brain
Go takes everything in Free and loosens the limits: more prompts that use tools, more file uploads, more images, more voice chats and a longer memory. The amount of text you can paste on the fast model rises from about 12 pages to about 40.
What Go does not add, according to the plan summary, is the advanced reasoning model that Plus includes. Think of Go as “Free without running out” rather than “a smarter ChatGPT”. OpenAI also states that this plan may contain ads, which matters if you use it for anything you would rather keep uninterrupted.
At $5 a month, Go costs $60 a year.
ChatGPT Plus ($20 a month): the upgrade that changes the answers
Plus is where the quality of the answers changes, not just the quantity. It includes everything in Go plus:
- Advanced reasoning with GPT-5.6 — the model takes more time to work through multi-step problems, which shows most in maths, analysis, planning and code.
- Higher limits on prompts and file uploads, and more complex, detailed image creation.
- Expanded Deep Research for longer, sourced research reports.

At $20 a month, Plus costs $240 a year. For a student writing essays or a small-business owner drafting documents every day, the reasoning model and the ability to keep work in projects are usually what justify that, more than the higher message limits.
ChatGPT Pro (from $100 a month): for professionals who live in it
Pro includes everything in Plus with five times higher usage limits, Pro-level reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra (OpenAI’s newest model — see our GPT-6 Astra breakdown), maximum Codex tasks, unlimited and faster image creation, maximum Deep Research and memory, and early access to experimental features. The fast model can take roughly 250 pages of text at once, and reasoning roughly 680.
The price is listed as “from $100”, which means there is more than one Pro level. At the entry price that is $1,200 a year, so Pro only makes sense if ChatGPT is a core working tool and Plus limits are genuinely slowing you down.
Is a ChatGPT Plus subscription worth it?
A simple way to decide, without guessing:
- Use Free for two weeks and notice what stops you. If nothing does, you do not need to pay.
- If you only hit limits — images, uploads, voice — Go’s $5 fixes that.
- If the answers themselves fall short on hard questions, long documents or multi-step tasks, that is what Plus’s reasoning model is for.
- If you run out of Plus during a normal working week, then compare Pro.
According to OpenAI, Go, Plus and Pro can be bought with any major credit card, and Go and Plus are billed monthly, so you are not locked into a year to try them.
Subscription or API? They are different products
The $5, $20 and $100 plans are for using the ChatGPT app. They do not cover building your own software on OpenAI’s models — that is billed separately through the API, per amount of text processed. Your chats and privacy
On all four personal plans, OpenAI’s pricing page states that your content may be used to train its models, and that you can opt out. If you paste work documents or personal details into ChatGPT, turn that setting off first — it applies to paying users as well as free ones.
Teachers, students and nonprofits
- ChatGPT for Teachers is free for verified K-12 teachers at US schools until June 2027, according to OpenAI.
