The short version
- A faceless reel is four pieces: a script, a voice, visuals, and captions. AI
can do all four, and each takes minutes. - The voice is what makes it feel professional — more than the visuals. Get
that right first. - Watch the commercial licence. ElevenLabs’ free tier gives
10,000 credits a month
but grants no commercial licence below the $6 Starter plan. - Captions are not optional. Most short video is watched with the sound off.
Faceless short video — reels, Shorts, TikToks with no presenter on camera — is the format AI
tools fit best, because every part of it can be produced without a camera, a studio or a face. This
is the workflow, in the order you actually do it.
What is a faceless reel, and why does AI suit it?
It is a short vertical video carried by voice-over and visuals rather than by a person talking
to camera. Explainers, list videos, product walkthroughs, storytelling channels. Because nothing in
it requires filming, every component — script, narration, footage, captions — can be generated,
which is why the format has become the default entry point for AI video.
Step 1: the script, and the mistake everyone makes
Write or generate 100 to 150 words. That is 40 to 60 seconds spoken, which is the length that
holds.
The mistake is starting with an introduction. Short video has no patience for one. Open on the
most interesting sentence in the whole script — the surprising fact, the direct promise, the
question — and let the context follow. If your first line could open any video on the topic,
it is the wrong first line.
Step 2: the voice
This is where a reel stops sounding amateur, and it is worth more attention than the visuals.
Text-to-speech has moved far enough that a good result is indistinguishable from a recorded
narrator to most listeners.
Two things matter more than which tool you choose:
- Punctuation controls delivery. Full stops create pauses. Commas create
rhythm. A script written as one long sentence will be read as one long breathless sentence. - Pick a voice that matches the content. An energetic read on a serious topic
is the most common mismatch, and it reads as fake immediately.
On cost: ElevenLabs’ free plan includes 10,000 credits a month, which is roughly 10,000
characters of speech — several reels. Note that commercial use starts at the paid Starter
tier, $6 a month; the free plan does not include a commercial licence, which matters the
moment a reel is monetised or made for a client.
Step 3: the visuals
Three routes, in ascending order of effort:
- Stock footage. Fastest, free, and looks like everyone else’s. Fine for
volume. - AI images, animated. A still generated to match each line, then given motion.
This is the sweet spot for most channels: distinctive, cheap, and quick. Our
image-to-video guide covers which models take a
still as the first frame and what each costs per second. - Generated video clips. Best-looking and priciest. Costs are quoted per second
of output — from $0.05 on the cheapest tiers — and a shot often takes several attempts, so budget
from your retry rate rather than the headline rate. See our
per-second pricing comparison.
Cut every 3 to 5 seconds regardless of which route you take. A static shot held for ten seconds
loses people, however good it looks.
Step 4: captions
Most short video is watched muted, so captions are not an accessibility extra — they are how
the video is consumed. Every major editor generates them automatically from the audio now.
Two rules: keep them large enough to read on a phone at arm’s length, and keep them out of the
bottom third, where the platform puts its own interface over your video.
What actually decides whether it works
Not the tools. Three things:
- The first two seconds. More people leave there than at any other point.
- One idea per video. Two ideas means neither lands.
- Volume. Reach on short video is unpredictable per post and fairly predictable
over thirty posts. Anyone judging the format on five videos is judging noise.
What one reel actually costs
Costs vary with the route you take for visuals, so it helps to price a single 45-second reel
end to end. Video generation is billed per second of output, which makes the arithmetic simple:
| Route | Visuals | Voice | Roughly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stock footage | $0 | Free tier | $0, personal use only |
| AI stills, animated | ~$2.25 (45s at $0.05/s) | ~$0.20 of a paid plan | Under $3 |
| Generated video throughout | $2.25-$18 depending on tier and retries | ~$0.20 | $3-$18 |
The wide range on the last row is retries, not tariff. At $0.05 per second a 45-second reel is
$2.25 if every shot lands first time — and shots do not land first time. Three attempts per shot
is normal, which is the number that actually sets your budget.
A repeatable weekly routine
The format rewards consistency more than any individual video, so build it as a routine rather
than as a project:
- Write five hooks, pick one. Hooks are cheap to write and expensive to get
wrong. Never use the first. - Script to 120 words. Read it aloud once; cut whatever you stumble on.
- Generate the voice, then build visuals to the audio. This order matters — the
audio sets the timing, and matching audio to finished visuals is far harder than the reverse. - Cut every three to five seconds.
- Caption, then watch it muted before posting. If it does not work silent, it
does not work.
Want to hear it before deciding?
ElevenLabs — covered above — has a free tier of 10,000 credits a month, so you can run your own script through it in a couple of minutes without a card. Note that the free plan carries no commercial licence; that starts at $6 a month.

Frequently asked questions
Can I make a faceless reel entirely free?
Yes, within limits — free tiers cover script, voice and captions comfortably at low volume. The
constraint that bites first is usually the commercial licence rather than the quota.
How long should a faceless reel be?
40 to 60 seconds suits most explainer content, which is 100 to 150 words of script. Shorter
works for a single punchy fact; longer needs a genuinely strong reason.
Will platforms penalise AI-generated video?
Platforms have moved toward labelling AI content rather than suppressing it, and several offer
a disclosure toggle. Label it where asked, and note the policies change often enough to be worth
re-reading.
What is the cheapest part to upgrade first?
The voice. It costs a few dollars a month and changes how professional the whole video sounds
more than any other single upgrade.
Do I need video editing skills?
No. Current editors assemble a video from a script and generate captions automatically. The
skill that matters is writing the first two seconds.
