What is Claude Opus 5?
Claude Opus 5 is Anthropic’s flagship, released in July 2026 at unchanged Opus pricing of
$5 in / $25 out per million tokens. It ranks #1 of 170 models on the Artificial Analysis
Intelligence Index with a score of 61, more than doubles Claude Opus 4.8 on Frontier-Bench
v0.1, and posts roughly three times the next-best result on ARC-AGI 3. An API-only Fast mode
is billed separately at $10 / $50.
The notable thing about Opus 5 is not the benchmark position but that it arrived without a
price increase. A generational capability jump at flat pricing changes the calculus for
anyone already on Opus 4.8: the migration is a model-string change with no budget
consequence, which is rare enough to be worth acting on promptly. The Fast mode is the one
decision that needs thought — it doubles both rates, so it only pays where latency is the
product rather than a nicety, such as interactive coding assistants or live agent loops
where a user is waiting. For batch work, overnight agents and anything queued, standard mode
delivers the same intelligence at half the price.

Domande frequenti
How much does Claude Opus 5 cost per 1M tokens?
Claude Opus 5 costs $5.00 per 1M input tokens and $25.00 per 1M output tokens. At a typical 4:1 input-to-output mix that blends to about $9.00 per 1M tokens.
How much does Claude Opus 5 cost per month?
A small-team workload of 20M input and 5M output tokens a month costs about $225 on Claude Opus 5. A side project (1M in / 0.25M out) costs roughly $11.25.
What is a cheaper alternative to Claude Opus 5?
Mistral 7B is the strongest cheaper option in our database at $0.0220 per 1M blended — about 100% less than Claude Opus 5. It is also open-weight, so self-hosting is an option.
Can I run Claude Opus 5 locally?
No. Claude Opus 5 is a closed, API-only model — the weights are not released, so it cannot be self-hosted.
Why does Claude Opus 5 charge more for output than input?
Output tokens are generated one at a time and cannot be batched the way a prompt can, so they cost the provider more to serve. Claude Opus 5 charges 5× more for output, which is why prompt-heavy workloads are far cheaper to run than generation-heavy ones.
Prices are the published list rates for the model's primary API and are reviewed as providers change them. Volume, batch and cached-input discounts are not included. Compare every model side by side in the Database di modelli IA o il classifica dei modelli linguistici (LLM leaderboard).
